Due to:

• Enhanced conversion to small aggregate forms of lipids

• Decreased pool size from different lung injury

• Mechanical factors, e.g. alveolar collapse

Surfactant quantity and composition may be reduced as a result of different lung injury. In certain situations the complete structure is damaged, while in others only one part is damaged, or the quantity produced is insufficient for therapeutic requirements.
